Dead Legends LARP has a little played plot feature that brings intrigue, espionage, and murder to our little horror LARP. They are plot hooks delivered via dossiers only available to specific PC playable NPC factions: The criminal underworld, the legal system, and nation-state connections. Payment for taking part in these activities comes in the form of Favors, and like any real world favor, they can be traded in for goods and services that can reap some nice rewards.
Access to the criminal underworld is done via the Streetwise advance given to anyone with the Criminal Training list. The general information provided through this network includes who is doing what, who needs what, and what the law may know about the activities. The local gangs provide information on events, meetings, and sometimes wish lists for items. Completion of these activities can earn Favor and cash for the PC.
Legal Connections gives those with the Investigation Training list access to the legal system. These reports tell of what is known about the criminal underworld to hinder its activities. From knowledge of a gold heist to known criminals moving through the region, and bounties for high ranking criminals the Favors and cashed earned can be well worth the effort.
PCs are permitted to have both Streetwise and Legal Connections and decide to which they are more loyal. This is the old west, where the difference between a criminal and lawman can simply be the badge.
Allegiance is found on the Civil and Investigation training list or can be taken by the Texican Nationality without either list. Every North American country in our alt-universe is an option: the United States of America, Confederate States of America, Empire of Mexico, British Dominion of Canada, Commonwealth of Deseret, and the Republic of Texas.
Unlike Legal Connections and Streetwise, PCs can only have one Allegiance and for purposes of fair play, cannot act against the interests of their Allegiance. This means that at each game, each of these countries will have its own agenda that those with Allegiance to the said country can read and carry out. The request can be as simple as gathering intelligence on other national assets (spies), acquiring and shipping item back home, stealing from NPCs and PC alike, murdering PCs and NPCs alike. With Allegiance, you can be a politician, spy, a killer, or just a loyal citizen who wants to help their home of pride.
Those who wish to be heavily involved can take Allegiance and step up as a local leader of their Allegiance community. Doing all things in the name of the said country, openly advocating for their nation over others, speaking and acting as a true native son/daughter.
When it comes to playing the spy game, you can even go a step further and choose the Agent specialization of the Investigation Training. As an Agent, you can learn to intercept letters and telegrams sent out by PCs and Story using the Information Leak skill. With Secret Channels you expand your skill set and access to specialized communication methods so that other agents are unable to read your outbound communications. Further, you do not have to have any Allegiance in order to become an Agent. You could work for yourself, the benefit of the town, or some other entity unknown and unnamed. The choices are yours.
From all of this, you can jump down the rabbit hole into the world of the Spy Tertiary Training. The Spy is the James Bond of the Allegiance game, using the tools available via Criminal and Investigation the Spy can occasionally peek into the activities of other countries, intercept those secret documents, and easily take on other personae to avoid capture or conduct business. Dangerous work for those who wish to seek it out.
Spy vs Spy in Dead Legends is a game of intelligence and patience. There is no quick reward from Story in this game, as much of it will be player driven. The mods provided by Story will be the results of the actions of the Allegiance and Agent players, so the more you do the more will happen. Jump on in, its just a training list away.
