One of the foundations of the Dead Legends system is the Focus Pool. After examining the way that Focus works we have decided to make some changes to improve the health of the game. In order to reward in character interactions, Vices and Virtues have been expanded. We aim to discourage passive play and offer diminishing returns on Focus purchases in order to allow newer characters to remain competitive in terms of Focus generation.
In the current rules, a new player with 10 focus generates half as much Focus over the course of a game as a player with 20 focus. That’s half as many abilities, half as much crafting, half as much gathering, half as many mechanical interactions. As such, we have reduced all passive Focus generation from half of the character’s total Focus pool per period to a flat 5 per period, adjusted by the use of items and Advance purchases. However, because of the many new ways that a player can generate Focus (between 1 and 20 in a quarter of an hour!) any player can generate as much Focus as they require, depending on their involvement with Vice and Virtue roleplay.
When it comes to the Vice/Virtue roleplay the major change is that everyone will be able to participate in all of the Vices/Virtues gaining the benefit of the Focus refresh. Each character will have a Favored and a Forsworn Vice/Virtue; Favored will increase the benefits of taking part in the Vice/Virtue, while Forsworn will not restore anything. We are also allowing Vice roleplay to stack so that you can combine them as you see fit to maximize the amount of focus you can restore in this manner (Drinking while Gambling for example.) Finally we are adding new Vices and reducing the participation time from 30 minutes to 15 minutes to encourage more Vice/Virtue use.
In addition to game mechanics we are working to add crafted consumables that will enhance the Focus refresh of Vice/Virtue roleplay. The addition of crafted consumables will give some of the less utilized tradeskills a little more oomph, and support the IG economy.
