Found in Algonquian legend this mythical cannibal is native to the northern forests of the Atlantic coast and in the Great Lakes Region of the USA and Canada. In the legends it has the appearance of a monster with some human characteristics, or is an evil spirit possessing a human making them into a monster. It is historically associated with cannibalism, murder, and insatiable greed.
The Wendigo is a metaphor for self-aggrandizing greed and excessive consumption. To the natives, White Man is a Wendigo coming to consume, steal, and kill the native peoples. Lucky for us we know this is not the case and that this creature really is simply a myth.
