Lore of the Week - Halloween Superstitions in 1879
October 2, 2017
The customs of the Irish may seem quaint, but they come with superstitions that the modern Spiritualist should consider as they may be founded in some reality. Not all of these superstitions are limited to Halloween, but at that time of year they are the most potent.
Jack O'Lantern - The Irish believe that spirits (Aos Sí) dwell in the world, and that on Halloween these spirits move about more freely than any other night. To keep the evil spirits away they will carve turnips and mangel wurzels with gruesome faces and place them around the house.
Owls - Unsure if this comes from the Irish but in the Confederacy, there are those that believe Owls heard hooting at this is a harbinger of death to someone close to the hearer.
Footsteps on the road - If you are out walking on Halloween, and you hear footsteps behind you. Do not turn around, it could be the dead, and if you look they will claim you.
Crossroads - If you go to a crossroads at Halloween and listen to the wind, you will learn all the most important things that will befall you during the next twelve months.
Bats- If you see bats flying around your house on Halloween - inside or out- it is a sign of ghosts and spirits nearby. If a bat flies around a house 3 times, it is a death omen. If bats come out early and fly around playfully, then it is a sign of good weather to come.
Graves - Don't point at a grave or your finger will rot off. When a good life was lived, flowers will grow on the deceased's grave. But if the deceased was evil, weeds will grow.
Ghosts - If you hold your breath while you drive by a cemetery, evil spirits can't enter your body. Never slam a door. You might hurt a ghost, who'll haunt you for the rest of your life. If you see a ghost, walk around it nine times, and it will disappear. Carry a lump of bread in your pocket when walking in the dark. It will serve as an offering to ghosts.
Cats - Kill a black cat on Halloween and you'll have seven years of bad luck.
The Moon - If you do not want to be haunting a graveyard any time soon, be sure you do not look at your shadow in the moonlight. Doing so on All Hallows Eve will guarantee your death within a short span of time.
