Lore of the Day – The Prophesied War and Deseret Independence
July 13, 2017
December 25, 1832 Joseph Smith, founder and then leader of the Mormon movement, prophesied that a war would begin in South Carolina; that the southern states would divide against the northern states; that the South would seek support from other nations, including Great Britain; and that the war would lead to the death and misery of many souls.
When the Prophesied War (War Between the States) broke out in 1861, the United Stated withdrew troops from the Utah Territory, giving the Mormon’s an opportunity at independent governance. The departure of the federal troops left several forts, including Fort Douglas, unmanned or undermanned. The Mormons took advantage and took possession of the forts with the Nauvoo Legion re-organizing as the primary army of Deseret.
It was not until 1866 that the USA realized what was happening but it was too late. War with the CSA and Britain prevented the sending of troops. When Deseret declares itself to be a sovereign nation December 1, 1868 the USA did send troops but the harsh winter hindered the troops and the expedition failed. Eventually all nations of North American recognized the Commonwealth of Deseret.
