Greetings! Here we are, at a place we could hardly fathom a year ago- Dead Legends is alive and growing well as we enter our SECOND YEAR!
Jamie, Micah, Bill and I regularly stop and the truth of it all rolls over us: We own and run a LARP and people seem to like it. This is, simply put, an amazing realization and we want to thank everyone who joined up in this strange and wondrous journey with us. Without a great team of enthusiastic Storytellers, volunteer Witnesses, well-wishers and imaginative players this story, this “alternate reality”, would still be some notes scribbled on legal pads and filling a labyrinth of desktop folders. Thank you all so much for making our vision a reality!
Now, on to the reason for this post: The State of the Game. Portentous sounding as that is, it is just a collection of thoughts, plans and ambitions for our second year of Dead Legends and going forward.
First up: Rulebooks, Rules and Active-Play-Testing
The rulebook, currently version 1.4.1 at the time of writing, will be updated at some point later this summer. We have continued to collect the clarifications, errors and oversights that many of you have been so observant as to notice. These will be addressed in the next Rulebook update.
Pertho Core Value: Rules will be Balanced, Fair and Rewarding.
We understand that rules changes often rock the boat for some folks, often when a nice loop-hole is closed or a “broken” skill is “nerfed”. This is understandable, however, we cannot let a broken, unfair or useless Advance or ruling continue- to do so would be a grave disservice to the Dead Legends community and the fairness of play. As we go forward we will be reevaluating Focus Costs on many skills (some will increase, some will decrease) as well as trimming away useless, redundant or confusing Skills and rules.
We apologize for the disappointment if this causes changes to your characters build or plan. The first year saw the exposure of our rule-set to nearly two hundred different players across a dozen events, Active Play has revealed a great many holes and weaknesses in our system that we could not and will not let ruin the balance or enjoyment of anyone.
We are not so blinded as to believe that we wrote a Perfect Rules System! You, the players, actions, comments and insights have proven invaluable in showing us where we have room to improve and clarify.
Dead Legends will ALWAYS be an actively improving game and system.
If you are ever effected by a rules change, see a gap in the rules or simply do not agree with the ruling please tell us! Send a message via our website under the Feedback section- this will fire right over to our rules authors to read.
Second: Crafting, Trade Post and Economy
Balancing a LARP economy is challenging. It is totally reliant on a massive amount of random factors interacting and can easily collapse or inflate beyond reason and ruin the fun for all involved. We don't want that to happen!
We will continue to tweak and balance the Trade Post resources (such as Trade Connections and Allegiance Requisition) as well as the Crafting Schematics and economy influencing Skills.
We want prices to remain in a realistic range of 1880's prices. Without addressing some of these issues inflation is the long term inevitable result and no one will benefit from that. Dead Legends needs your help as players to help balance prices on your end, charging and paying fair rate for goods and services.
We have a number of ways that we have come up with to help improve the flow of the Lazarus Economy as well as help those of you who are not a craftsman or are new to the camp have access to goods and services without negatively impacting the local crafters. Look for these to be implemented soon.
Thirdly: Our Camp- Lazarus
The original Lazarus Gap, Camp Furnace Hills, was badly damaged by tornado winds in March this year, causing us to jump over to our back-up, Camp Echo Trails. While Echo Trails is a decent camp and we know it well from our time spent running Pennsyltucky there we are on the lookout for a new home. Ideally a location would be in Eastern PA, laid out vaguely like a town, have plenty of forested trails, rustic cabins and winter sleeping space. Echo Trails will serve for the time being, they are fixing up some of the closed buildings. If anyone has leads on campgrounds in PA please let us know!
Magic is getting an overhaul.
Spells will be on printed scrolls with all current scrolls being turned in for replacement. Thaumaturgy aka Miracles.
The seeds have been sown, the power of the Divine will begin making its presence known. Rituals.
Powerful effects from elaborate displays.
Invention and innovation will allow the studious craftsmen to push the limits of our Crafting System and beyond.
