The Supernatural is, for the most part, as real in the wider world of Dead Legends as it was in our own history: “Possibly but probably not”. Human superstition, faith and the occult, are very real to many Characters or their families. This is a matter of belief instead an observed truth. To most of the world Magic is a fable and Monsters are not real, they are results of human imagination and fear of the unknown.
Most Characters will likely be awestruck or terrified the first time they see a obviously Supernatural occurrence (even if it is just a convincing hoax!) Skeptics and, in fact, all modern Dead Legends humans will find their worldview and sense of place in the universe shaken by the things they witness and discover in the Black Hills. This transformation is extremely rewarding role-play, indulge yourselves!
Playing it too cool removes much of the fun of a "horror" game. Sure your Character is a stone cold killer but otherworldy occurrences should still shock them or make them inwardly doubt their own capability or control. Characters might become jaded over the course of play, seeing and doing things no human thought previously possible but half the fun is PRETENDING that it really is amazing or terrifying stuff! The more we, as a gaming community, normalize and trivialize the "supernatural" the less special it is and the thinner the illusion that a bunch of nerds playing pretend in the woods becomes. The more we communally agree, through role-play, that stuff is "scary" the scarier it becomes to us and our characters. Act scared, act amazed, ham it up, psych yourselves out!
Outside of the Black Hills the “supernatural” is largely limited to ghost stories/sightings, charlatans and magicians claiming Power and campfire stories of monsters seen in the woods. Surely in some dark corner of the world the aberrant or ancient lurks undiscovered but most of humanity has never encountered anything genuinely “not of this world”. Keep this in mind as you concept your character. Anything is possible...in your character's own mind! Occult investigators and mystics might be self-delusional, seeing ghosts in reflections and chasing shooting stars. After all, They Want to Believe.
